Who are we?

In 2008, Fair Trade Laos was established by a small group of motivated business people and NGOs that recognized the social and economic viability of Fair Trade to improve the lives of producers’ and farmers’ whilst concurrently offering high-quality products. Fair Trade Laos (FTL) aims to contribute to improving the living conditions of the poorest portion of the Lao people by fostering the country’s economic growth in harmony with improved social and environmental standards.

Our Mission

  • To offer economically viable solutions for poverty alleviation among small holder farmers/workers and small producers/artisans.
  • To strengthen SME’s, producer and processor groups through the development of product value chains, applying the principles and standards of Fair Trade Laos.
  • To promote sustainable use of natural resources to add value to Lao products.

What are the main activities of FTL?

DEVELOP FT CERTIFICATION FOR LAOS Develop Fair Trade Certification body and standards that fits to the Lao context. Fir Trade Laos combine the fair trade and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Concept because of its common core value of shared value, accountability business practices on social and environment for sustainable economic development. FTL promote peer to peer and participatory certifying system and FTL develop its standards based on existing national, regional and international standards and procedures such as FT international standards, ISO26000, UN global compact, ASEAN CSR vision 2020 and relates Lao law.

AWARENESS CREATION Fair Trade Laos is the primary body in Laos creating awareness of the fair trade concept among both consumers and businesses alike in Laos through marketing and events.  Fair Trade Laos regularly attends trade shows and events throughout Asia to promote FTL products and building understanding about FT to the consumers as well as organising several events throughout the year including a yearly event to mark World Fair Trade Day. Fair Trade Laos see the importance of working with the government and corporate sector with the long term aim for government policy’s to integrate fair trade and CSR concepts.

Who are FTL members?

Fair Trade Laos members are small and medium sized enterprises, local nonprofit organisations and producer groups that doing business on organic agriculture and handicraft. FTL currently have 10 members. However, FTL has certified demand growth in tourism sector especially hotels and restaurants in the recent year.
