How to Get Certified

Since inception we have promoted the concept of Fair Trade within the government, business and consumers in Laos. Fair Trade is a new concept which remains to be fully understood by potential members, consumers and other stakeholders. From early 2011, Fair Trade Laos has been evaluated suitable methods for Lao certification body recognized by both local and international consumers and other national certification bodies as a first step for members to realize these potential advantages. We have developed minimal membership and product standards certification* for FTL members. Existing members have received our regular support and advice to reach compliance with these minimum standards.

Who Do We Certify?

Social enterprises, Small and medium enterprises, Cooperative and Producer Groups. *NOTE: Our certification scheme is currently based on mutual trust until increased financial support is available to undertake random checks and supervision.

Our 2 Types of Certification

COMPANY BASED (CSR) This certificate will be approved for the demonstration of “Corporate Social Responsibility” of internal management system of the company. After passing the checking process the company will be approved for membership of Fair Trade Laos and will be authorised to use Fair Trade Laos Company logo on poster, brochures, website and retail shop displays, etc. This logo is not authorised to use on products.
PRODUCT CERTIFICATION (FT) For specific use on approved products; Members select products for submission and approval. For each selected product the value-chain information is to be provided to FTL. Once approved the “Fair Trade Lao Product” logo can be utilised on all approved products. This certification type is similar to the Fairtrade International (FLO) scheme.

Our Certification Process

The certification cycle is divided into two parts: Year One: A potential member is requested to complete and submit assessment forms. The Fair Trade Laos certification team then evaluates the information according to Fair Trade Lao minimum standards. The FTL team will develop and forward an “improvement report” for guidance to potential members to facilitate their compliance with FTL standards. Year Two and Beyond: Members will be evaluated using the “improvement report” as the guideline. This report will indicate the positive solutions gained during the year. In subsequent years FTL will prepare additional “improvement reports.”

Step #1

Complete and submit an assessment form for approval based on the company mission and purpose. Two assessment forms are available: 1. Company membership assessment form. 2. Product value-chain assessment form. Contact the FTL team at: info@laosfairtrade.org Both forms, after completion, may be sent together.

Step #2

The Fair Trade Laos team will examine the completed forms and may seek further clarifications. The first company report will be considered by the FTL certification committee.

Step #3

The certification committee will develop an “improvement report” for the member. The member is then expected to agree, accept and follow the suggestions included in the “improvement report” and subsequent evaluation at year’s end. The “improvement report” and evaluation system have been established to support and assist members to reach compliance with Fair Trade Laos and international standards.

Step #4

Membership fees paid. For details of membership and certification costs please contact the FTL team.

Step #5

Member receives the FTL Certificate based on the first step request and is authorised to use the appropriate Fair Trade Laos logo according to the FTL rules. This certification is valid for one year.

Step #1

Complete evaluation form and submit to FTL team. This form will assess progress based upon the first and subsequent “improvement report/s.” When a member wishes to certify additional products new product assessment forms are required for completion and submission.

Step #2

The Fair Trade Lao Certification Committee evaluates the progress achieved during the previous year based on the relevant “improvement report.”

Step #3

The FTL Certification Committee will develop an “improvement report” for implementation in the following year.

Step #4

Membership/approval fee fully paid. For details of membership and certification costs please contact the FTL team.

Step #5

Member receives the appropriate FTL certificate and is authorized to use the appropriate Fair Trade Laos logo according to the FTL rules. This certification is valid for one year. During the year of certificate validity occasional random checks on the company management system and previously approved product/s value-chain will be assessed on-site by the Certification Committee prior to, and after providing a certificate/s. If the result of a random check is negative or unacceptable, the particular certification will be immediately cancelled.
